Morning Nick,
Another fine newsletter, you do us all proud.
The weather (in sunny Essex) was fantastic the weekend, so I sowed around 40 seeds yesterday, and placed them all in unheated propogators in my unheated greenhouse.
We are supposed to get bad weather with maybe some snow tomorrow. What should I do. Should I just leave them where they are or do I have to get my parafin heater out this evening.

Hi Mark,
If they’ve only just been sown, they’ll probably be ok although of course take longer to germinate.
Any germinated seedlings will need some heating in a cold greenhouse if the weather gets down to freezing. I’ll probably have a house full of plants tomorrow if it gets really cold!

Hi Nick,
I lost a lot of plants last year from blight and read on here its due to over watering.
I was too eager last year and grew around 25 money makers so this year have went with only three ( 1 alacante and 2 garders delights) for ease of controlling.
These share a good quality growbag for tomatoes and are in my green house which i’ve cleaned completely incase of any disease.
My question is do I need to put holes in the bottom of the growbag and how often should i water? is it once or twice a day or just keep the soil moist?
Looking for a good crop this year with patience.

Hi Chris,
Watering depends on temperature and the amount of leaves etc. so just keep the soil damp – that’s the easiest and probably best way to judge how much water is needed.
Over-watering is one of the reasons why plants can get blight, but it’s mainly wet leaves and rain.
I like to make a couple of holes each end in my grow bags – if you make holes in the sides, the water escapes too quickly.

i see that it is now too late to grow from seed this year, i am a little worried as i only sewed my seeds 8 days ago, they are coming up fine but will they be too late too?

Hi Nicola,
It’s not too late to sow from seed this year, you can sow up to the end of April and still get a crop this season – if you sow the right varieties.
The end of March and beginning of April is the best time to sow for growing most varieties outside if you live in the UK.
