Tomato Quick Start Guide

This is a basic quick start guide to begin growing tomatoes with the minimum of fuss.

Growing From Seed

Growing From Plug Plants

In the UK, last sowing beginning of May

May be bought until the beginning of June

  1. It is best to sow tomato seed indoors and keep them warm until they germinate.

  2. Always use new seed compost or multi purpose compost.

  3. When seeds germinate put them in a light position (indoors).

  4. When they start to grow their first true leaves pot them into individual 9cm (3inch) pots. This will be around two or three weeks after germination.

  5. Compost should not be too wet and plants should not be kept sitting in a tray of water.

  6. As plants grow pot them into bigger pots with new multi purpose compost.

  7. Don’t feed them with tomato food as the new compost has enough food in it already. A weak solution of general balanced feed may be ok if they need a boost - at half strength.

  8. Many people kill their tomato plants with kindness - too much water and too much food!

  9. They can only go outdoors overnight after the last frost in your area.

  10. There are two types of tomato plants - bush and tall. You don’t need to pinch out the side shoots on the bush varieties (sometimes called determinate), the tall are called cordon or indeterminate.

  11. Don’t remove the flowers.

  12. Contrary to popular opinion, tomato plants do not like rain on their leaves - wet leaves over a few cold nights and tomato blight is almost certain = THE END of your lovely plants!
  1. Pot plant directly into 9cm (inch) pots.

  2. Always use new multi purpose compost.

  3. Keep them indoors in a sunny position and pot them into bigger pots after about three weeks.

  4. Don’t keep them sat in a tray of water. Also, very wet compost overnight is something to try and avoid - water them in the morning so the compost has a chance to dry out a bit before the temperature drops at night.

  5. Don’t feed them because the new compost they receive when they are potted into bigger pots, contains all the food they need. If they look as if they need a boost give them a general feed like miracle grow at half strength.

  6. Many people kill their tomato plants with kindness - too much water and too much food!

  7. They can only go outdoors overnight after the last frost in your area.

  8. Contrary to popular opinion, tomato plants do not like rain on their leaves - wet leaves over a few cold nights and tomato blight is almost certain = THE END of your lovely plants!

Tomatoes are easy to grow if you follow a few simple rules. If you have a few setbacks, don’t let it put you off trying again. I can’t tell you the amount of failures I’ve had ... lessons learned the hard way are long remembered and make you a better tomato grower next time.

If your seeds haven’t come through as expected, why not try tomato plug plants and get off to a quick start.

One last piece of advice is - don’t put all your tomatoes in one basket - or in other words, give your plants plenty of room because they can grow quite big and need plenty of room for their roots.
